Hoi An Covered Bridge, also known as the Japanese Bridge, is one of the unique cultural and architectural symbols ofHoi An ancient town at night. This bridge was built in the late 16th or early 17th century by Japanese merchants, to connect two neighborhoods and facilitate trade.

By 1653, a pagoda was added to the north of the bridge, and the name “Chua Cau” began to be used by the people. In 1719, Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu named the bridge “Lai Vien Kieu,” meaning “A bridge to welcome guests from afar,” expressing the desire for Hoi An to become a destination attracting merchants and tourists from all over.

The Japanese Covered Bridge is 18m long, spanning a small branch of water flowing into the Thu Bon River. The typical “house above, bridge below” architecture is delicately designed, harmoniously combining Japanese and Vietnamese styles. The bridge surface is paved with sturdy wooden planks, with small wooden platforms on both sides, which used to be used as a place to sell goods. The bridge roof is softly curved, covered with yin-yang tiles, bringing a graceful and ancient beauty. The bridge foundation is built from solid stone pillars, not only ensuring durability but also highlighting the unique features in the architecture of the intersection between two cultures.

The architecture of Tan Ky ancient house is a harmonious combination of three cultures: Vietnam, China and Japan. The house is tubular, has two floors and many separate rooms, built mainly of wood with sophisticated carvings, symbolizing wealth and development. In particular, the house has no windows but is still airy thanks to the design of a skylight in the middle, taking advantage of natural light and air circulation.

The house also preserves many valuable artifacts, such as the parallel sentences “Bach Dieu” written with 100 strokes, which is considered by archaeologists to be unique. In addition, horizontal lacquered boards with profound meanings such as “Tam thuong thai” (keeping a pure conscience) and “Tich duc luu ton” (teaching children to preserve virtue for future generations) are also displayed here.
